Eagle Volleyball to Celebrate Sophomores

Expect plenty of excitement during Wednesday's sophomore night in Eagle Gymnasium, when the Siskiyous volleyball team plays its final regular season home match against Lassen. 

The excitement level at home matches has been high throughout the season for these Eagles, who have been supported by a vocal student cheering section as well as young players from local high schools and middle schools. 

Sophomores Jade Crawford, Ashley Quizon, and Karli Reynolds will be celebrated, and the Eagles will attempt to improve on their 4-4 conference and 12-12 overall record. 

You can expect to hear a voice from the past sum up the present moment well when Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" plays on the public address system: "… good times never seemed so good."  

The times were good indeed when the Eagles swept three of their conference home matches, including Shasta on Nov. 1st. 

Crawford had a match-high 19 kills that night, Quizon led all players with 16 digs, and freshman Isabella Colombo had 36 assists. 

Quizon, a 5-5 libero/defensive specialist from Denver, CO, ranks 1st among Golden Valley Conference players in receptions and 2nd in digs and digs per set. 

Crawford, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Bakersfield, ranks 2nd in receptions, 4th in kills per set, 5th in total kills, and 6th in digs per set. 

Reynolds, a 5-7 outside hitter from Weed, ranks 9th in the GVC in receptions and is 4th on the team in kills and digs. 

Among the Eagle freshmen, Colombo is 2nd in conference in assists and 5th in service aces per set; Josie Cole is 5th in blocks per set; Madelyn Truelock is 6th in blocks per set and 9th in kills per set and total blocks, and Julia DeLeon is 8th in kills per set and receptions. 

With two matches remaining, the 2023 Eagles are on the cusp of becoming the first Siskiyous volleyball team to finish with a .500 or better overall record since 2015.  

They're a team that coach Lyndi Scholl has been encouraging "to go for every ball and keep everything alive until the whistle blows… never let the ball drop." 

They've been getting key contributions from many players and have had many "good times never seem so good" moments, including winning a pre-conference tournament. 

Scholl says they've worked on "how we carry ourselves, being invested in each point, bouncing back quickly, and understanding the team has their back." 

They've also hosted camps for younger players who are returning to watch the Eagles in action. "It's exciting when we're winning, and we want it to be a good environment," Scholl said. 

They'll need a top effort against a Lassen team that is 7-1 in GVC, 26-3 overall, and hasn't lost a set in 12 of its last 13 matches. The only blemish in that streak was a 3-0 loss to conference-leading Feather River (8-0 and 22-5). 

The Eagles, tied for third with Butte in the GVC, will finish the regular season Friday afternoon at Redwoods.
