The Eagle baseball team went 2-2 in a pair of doubleheaders at Mendocino in Ukiah last week. They lost two games on Friday and won a pair Saturday to finish the week with a 4-7 record.
Everything clicked for Siskiyous on the way to an 11-1 win in Saturday's first game. They scored early and often and totaled 12 hits. Callan Vreim pitched all 7 innings, allowing only 4 hits, 3 walks, and a hit batter. Mendocino scored its only run quietly, on a groundout in the 4th inning. Vreim had one strikeout, and the Eagle defense did its job well when the ball was in play, committing just one fielding error.
Freshman rightfielder Kadin Bolanos hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning and went 2 for 3 with 3 runs batted in, 2 runs scored, and a walk.
Devyn Engdahl was 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI; Dante Bravo doubled, walked and scored 3 runs; Connor Jones was 2 for 4 with a double.
Leadoff hitter Taiyo Kurosawa singled, drove in two, and scored twice; Dewitt Nunery was 2 for 4 with an RBI; Kekai Ferguson singled and drove in a run; Ryelen Samson singled and scored twice.
The Eagles won Saturday's second game 7-4 even though they were out-hit by Mendocino 10-8. They broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 4th when freshman catcher Nathaniel Cook hit a two-run homer and Kurosawa singled to drive in shortstop Dylan Battye.
Cook finished with 3 RBI. Kurosawa and designated hitter Drew Raebel had 2 hits each. Kurosawa and Samson had stolen bases.
Geoffrey Allen pitched the first 5 innings and gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits. Kameron Saucedo gave up a run in the 6th, then Caughlin Shults finished it, striking out two in a scoreless 7th.
The defense again had just one fielding error, and Allen, Battye, and Bravo teamed up to turn a double play.
Saturday's sweep followed a pair of losses to Mendocino the day before, 7-6 and 8-3. The Eagles scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th of game one to take a 6-5 lead on a two-run double by Battye, who then scored on a triple by Samson. But Mendocino won it in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a fielder's choice that scored a run.
Carson Jones started and pitched 5 innings for the Eagles. He struck out 5 and walked none while giving up 7 hits and 5 runs, 4 of them earned. Austin Jaramillo didn't allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings but walked a batter and was charged with a run. Jakob Kinney took the loss.
Nunery went 3 for 4, Vreim singled and drove in two, and Battye had two hits.
Friday's nightcap was tied 2-2 before Mendocino scored 4 in the bottom of the 4th and then single runs in the 5th and 6th.
Vreim doubled and drove in two to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 3rd, and Kurosawa hit a solo homer in the 7th.
Starting pitcher Dante Bravo went 3 1/3 innings and took the loss.
The Eagles will be looking to improve their record when they play three games at Contra Costa this weekend, their final games before opening the Golden Valley Conference season the following Friday at Butte. Contra Costa has lost its first 10 games by a combined score of 137-24.
