Freshman Throwers Bring Home Medals from GVC Championships
College of the Siskiyous' track and field athletes set some personal bests and won two medals at the 2025 Golden Valley Conference Championships April 26th in Marysville.
Freshmen Zaveon Jones of Mountlake Terrace, WA, and Cody Clarke of Battle Ground, WA, both made the post-meet podium on a cold and rainy day at Yuba College.
Clarke, who was competing in just his second meet of the season, placed third in javelin with a throw of 136 feet, 6 inches. An all-conference football player for the Eagles last fall, Clarke's season was delayed this spring due to his academic time commitments in the EMT program, head coach Tim Frisbie said.
Jones, the Eagles' all-conference defensive lineman and short yardage running back last fall, won his third place medal in shot put with a personal best throw of 41 feet, 10 inches.
Frisbie said the Eagles were hoping for a warm day to finish their season, but instead it was pouring rain and so cold that a text sent from Marysville that morning "showed snow all over the road."
Still, the Eagles finished with some strong performances.
Frisbie said the 4-by-100m relay team had a good chance to place third but was slowed by one rough baton hand-off and finished 4th instead. Freshman lead runner Robin Trenbeath of Phoenix, OR, had a good first leg, Frisbie said. The team also featured sophomore Genaro Reyna of Cashmere, OR, and freshmen Asher Lucas of Redmond, WA, and Anthony Seiler of Chico.
Trenbeath had a PR of 24.91 in the 200m, while sophomore Key'shawn Thomas of Bremerton, WA, made the meet finals in both javelin and discus. A football all-conference honorable mention defensive lineman in the fall, Thomas placed 7th in javelin with a season-best throw of 127-4. He placed 9th in discus (109-3) and 12th in shot put (35-6).
Sophomore Tyler Martino of McMinnville, OR, placed 6th in high jump; Seiler placed 7th in long jump; and sophomore Soren Slowikowski of Ashland, OR, placed 7th in pole vault after competing in that event for the first time this season a couple weeks earlier.
Frisbie, who also works with Eagles in the weightroom, said this year's track and field athletes are all great kids who are motivated, get along, and work hard. All but Trenbeath came from the football team. Many of the sophomores will be moving on to continue playing football at four-year schools, while the freshmen track athletes are among a group of close to 40 football players expected to return for a second season.
Frisbie thanked assistant coach Steve Pyles for doing much of the event coaching for this year's track and field team, and he thanked former head coach Katie Woodward for working with the throwers twice a week in Yreka and being there to help at the conference finals.
None of the Eagles qualified to advance to the Nor Cal Trials meet.
