Key Returning Starters and Many Freshmen Highlight 2023 Men’s Soccer Roster
As he often does, Siskiyous head coach Ed Kephart has put together a 2023 men's soccer roster that features players from nearby and very far away.
Scheduled to open their season with a scrimmage Saturday at Rogue Community College, this year's team includes 8 players from England, four from Siskiyou County, two from southern Oregon, two from other northern California cities, one from Australia, and one from Argentina.
Five returning sophomores, including two who earned all-conference honors last year, are joined by 13 freshmen.
Sophomore forward Alfie Snow of Middlesbrough UK led the Eagles in scoring last year and earned First Team All-Golden Valley Conference honors. Midfielder Ben Chandler of Durham, England, was Second Team All-Conference.
Also returning are midfielder Lewis White of England, who played in 14 of 16 games last year; Carter Edwards of Weed, who started five games at goalkeeper; and Edric Moroyoqui of Montague, a defender who played in a few games last year but showed much improvement in the spring, according to Kephart.
The freshmen on the roster are filling spots that were held by more a dozen players who graduated from last year's team, including six who transferred to four-year schools.
Freshmen include two goalkeepers, 6-foot-4 Oliver Gregory of Yorkshire, England; and 5-foot-11 Ben Lewis of South Hampton, England.
The group of new "good local kids" includes defender Alonzo Campos of Mount Shasta High, midfielder Hunter Hill of Yreka High, forward Edgar Martinez of Tulelake, and forward Jessiah Vogel of Weed.
Also new to the team are defender Yahir Alanis of Smith River, defender Deji Fasawe of London, defender Alfie Jenner of England, defender Alex Lopez of Ashland, OR, forward Augstin Mateos of Buenos Aires, defender Joe Palmer of England, and forward Morgan Robson of Melbourne, Australia.
Kephart, now in his eighth year as the Eagles' men's and women's head coach, is again being assisted by Jake Leiffer and is again embarking on a schedule made for "road warriors." After their August 19 scrimmage at 8 p.m. in Medford, the Eagles have just one home game on their pre-conference schedule, September 5 against Woodland. They open GVC play at home against Redwoods September 26, then play five straight conference games on the road before finishing with four in a row at home on October 24 and 27 and November 3 and 7.
The six Eagles from last year's team who transferred to four-year schools were defender Luke Bishop (Wright State University), forward Juan Agustin Santana (Multnomah University), defender Kirk Rahill (King University), defender Sam Howie and forward Kasimu Ramazani (Justice College), and defender Ignacio Karanicolas (Midland University).
